An early picture of Speight's building before the present extensive additions and alterations were begun. Speight's Brewery was founded in May, 1876, by James Speight, C. F. Greenslade, and W. Dawson, and continued successful operations until June, 1923, when it became a branch of New Zealand Breweries, Limited. The growth of the business during the firm's many years of existence has been steady. In the early days the output was 12 large casks a day, and at present 400 of these casks are produced daily. This increase is in itself proof of the maintenance of the very high standard of purity and quality which Speight's Brewery has always endeavoured to produce.
