Left: MAROONED.—A home in the flooded area, completely surrounded by water, which can be seen lapping the step at the front door.

INVERCARGILL INUNDATED.—Many families were marooned in their flooded homes, traffic was held up in five or six streets, and merchandise was damaged in several wholesale stores, when the Otepuni Creek overflowed near the centre of the city yesterday morning. Left: A tram car travelling through the flood in Conon street. The tram is just approaching the railway crossing and Feming and Company’s mill can be seen on the left. The depth of the water can be gauged by the waves thrown up by the tram car. Right: The extent of the flooding along the Otepuni, Creek. Here the water is rushing over the bridge which connects Wood street with the gardens opposite the Southland Bowling Club’s green. There was three feet of water covering the green when this photograph was taken.

STALIN SENDS HUGE NEW ARMY AGAINST FINLAND.—Reports state that diplomatic circles believe that Russia is preparing to employ the full force of her vastly superior man-power in a steamroller attempt to smash the defence. This picture, just released, shows some of the scores of Red Army, tanks which rumbled through Red Square during the twentieth anniversary celebration of the Bolshevist Revolution at Moscow on November 7. The parade was designed to impress the population with the efficiency of Russia’s mechanised military might.
