Ho was engaged in cleaning a spooling machine while it was running'ami his right hand was caught in the machinery, with the result that it was rather badly torn, 13 stitches being required; The lad had the presence of mind to shut off the power with his left baud, otherwise more serious injuries would have been iulli-lcd. SWIMMING. Despite the cold there was a good muster of members _at the weekly championship competitions of the Balehitha Swimming Club last night. The water was cold and times suffered as a result. BALCLUTHA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Mr H. Holgate presided over the monthly meeting of the above committee last night. The secretary of the Otago Congregational Youth Council notified that the Easter camp had been cancelled owing to unforeseen circumstances, and thanked the committee for offering the use of the school buildings. Pictorial Instructions Equipments Limited, Auckland, notified that a limited number of projection machines were available at £l2 ss.—Decided to procure one of the machines immediately. Education Board notified that £3 3s had been donated to Balclutha Swimming Club.—Received with thanks. The Board also notified that the incidental grant for the current year would be £202 10s, payable in monthly instalments of £l6 17s 6cl.—lb was stated that this was a reduction on last vear, when the monthly grant was £lB *ss. • Accounts amounting to £l7 9s 4d were passed for payment. Regarding the proposed! trip to Gore, for the Centennial celebrations there, it was reported that no further word l had been received from Gore, and it was decided to defer consideration till this came to hand, when a special meeting would be, called. Disappointment was expressed that the Balclutha School was not included in the big children’s gathering to be held in Dunedin. Members referred to the state of the school buildings, portion of which had been erected over 60 years ago. It was thought that the time was now opportune to approach'the board) with a request that a new schpol and residence be erected, and it was decided to write the board accordingly. The Head Master reported! that 1 the school had opened with a roll number of 345, 20 new pupils being enrolled. Miss L. Scott had been .appointed- probationary assistant, Miss 1). Sirett was extra probationary assistant. Mr L. G. Ball was relieving in place of Miss H. I. Johnson (resigned); and Mr J. K. Alexander was acting a? supernumerary. SOUTH OTAGO HIGH SCHOOL. The above school reopened with a roll number of 198 —114 girls and! 84 boys; 66 (32 girls and 34 boys) were new pupils. The number was 16 greater than that at the opening last year, and prospects were that the number would be increased within a few days. The staff is the same as last vear. BOWLING. The Kaitangata rink (W. Park, G. Pennell, J. Haig, P. Prescott), holders of the Gold Memorial Cup, had a hard tussle this week when they played a Stirling rink (W. Baird, T. Duncan, R. Cessford, L. Duncan) for the trophy. In the early stages the challengers went to the front and were leading 9-2. From then on play was fairly even, Kaitangata reducing the lead, and they led by one on the twentieth, end. Stirling were lying the shot on the last end, but the skip took out his own bowl and Kaitangata lay 2, the game ending 23-20 in favour of the holders.
