BURKES-ST. LEONARDS

REGATTA WELL PATRONISED I EVELYN WINS X. CLASS The Biirkcs-St. Leonards Regatta Committee could hardly have been more fortunate in their weather. Until the starting time it looked anything but promising, and it seemed as though rowing events, at any rate, would have to be postponed. But-the wind died to a reasonable strength and the full programme was carried through in short order. In the rowing events, the senior and junior fours provided most of the excitement, the latter being an exceptionally good l race, with Queen’s Drive only half a canvas ahead of Port Chalmers as they crossed the line. Miss Otago did not compete in the speed boat event. She was delayed and arrived too late for the race, but Mr D. Hardie put on two exhibition runs which commanded a, good deal of attention. Sadie K., with a minute on Korauri, won the race by five seconds. It was good racing, the two boats being neck and neck all the way. The fourteen-footers race was won by Evelyn, only three seconds ahead of Vat. Eileen was third and Ripple fourth. Wampa and Manahi did not compete. Lynette fouled Ripple right at the start and withdrew. Avenger was disqualified for carrying five of a

crew, and Winifred capsized on tb*first run In the 18ft and under, Kanui was disqualified ' for fouling a mark. There were good entries in most classes, although one race, the allcomers yachts, was dropped from the schedule on account of the failure ol the entrants to attend. Results:— ROWING.
