ILLUMINATED TRAFFIC MARKER

Of the many devices that have been made to provide safety markers on roads for night driving, one of the latest that seems to provide more positive illumination than any other so far devised, is that being tried out in Arkansas (U.S.A.). The system consists of a neon or other tubular rod or bar of light set across the roadway under a transparent material. Such light can be built into roadways at important intersections, turns, or other danger spots. In Arkansas, the neon light is set under a thick transparent sheet of plastic. It is reported that, after nine months’ tests with one of these illuminated road marks, during which an average of 9,tXX) motor vehicles a day has passed over it, the plastic substance shows no apparent depreciation of the surface, and its transparency is as good ns if the plastic were new! An advantage claimed for this style of illuminated traffic marker is that, on account of its being let into the roadway, no amount of glare or fog prevents drivers of approaching vehicles from seeing (he illuminated strip of roadway.
