The newly-constructed plant for dehydrating fruit was put into operation last week at Roxburgh, when a few cases of apricots were received. It is expected that now that the weather has taken up again the plant will bo kept busy for some considerable time. If the weather is at all suitable it is intended to partially dry the fruit in the sun and finish off the drying in the dehydrator. The dehydrator which has been installed is of the air blast tunnel typo. The air is heated by hot air pipes and is circulated over the fruit by means of a large suction fan placed at the other end of the tunnel. The tunnel has a dummy roof, and is so equipped as to allow for the return ot the warm air for reheating, so that the greatest economy may be secured. The fruit is graded after leaving the dehydrator and packed ready for despatch to Petone, where the final processing is carried out.

ROXBURGH BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Roxburgh Borough Council was presided oyer by the mayor (Air F. A. Laloli). The clerk, Vincent County Council, wrote enclosing a print of the memorial cairn which it was proposed to erect on the summit of the Haast Pass to commemorate the linking of Otago and Westland by road. The estimated, cost of the memorial and adjoining shelter for tourists was £350. The West Coast was finding half of the cost and this

end the other half. They asked the council to consider granting a sum towards the cost.—After discussion it was decided this council make a grant of £5. The Now Zealand Red Cross Society wrote to the mayor inviting him to take the necessary steps for establishing a branch of the society in the borough.—The Mayor stated that he would call a public meeting to see what could be done on the lines suggested. The reserves report stated that so far nothing had been done as regards rabbits- in the reserve, but that the fumigating was to be gone on with as soon as possible. The motor camp report stated that the camp had been kept very busy over the holidays, and on some nights had not been big enough to accommodate all the cars that required to be put up. The committee was asked to go into the question of the enlarging of the camp.
