M.G.M PRODUCTIONS SOME OUTSTANDING FILMS The general manager of Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer in New Zealand, Mr P. W. Macldock, states that a maximum of 47 productions will be released in New Zealand in 1940, of which major films would number at least nine, all in the finest M.G.M. tradition. Though ‘ Gone With the Wind ’ has been made in the studios, there have been no arrangements made for its release here yet. Listed among the principal attractions are ‘ It’s a Wonderful World,’ starring Claudette Colbert and James Stewart; ‘ Maisie,’ with Robert Young and Ann Sothern; ‘ Tarzan Finds a Son,’ Johnny Weismuller and Maureen O’Sullivan —the first of the series for three years; ‘ Good-bye, Mr Chips,’ Robert Donat and Greer Garson; ‘On Borrowed Time,’ Lionel Barrymore and Sir Cedric Hardwicke; ‘ Lady of the Tropics,’ Hedy Lamarr and Robert Taylor; ‘ Miracles For
Sale,’ Florence Rice and Robert Young; ‘ The Women,’ with Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, and Paulette Goddard; ‘ Thunder Afloat,’ Wallace Beery; ‘Babes in Arms,’ Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney; ‘ A Day at the Races,’ the Marx Brothers; ‘ Ninotochk,’ Garbo’s first Comedy, “ debunking ” Communism; ‘ Fast and Furious,’ after the ‘ Thin Man ’ style, with Franchot Tone and Ann Sothern; ‘ Broadway Melody of 1940,’ with Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell; ‘ North-West Passage,’ Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, in technicolour; ‘ The Life of Edison,’ on which Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy are now working; ‘Balalaika,’ Nelson Eddy and lllona Massey; ‘ Lover, Come Back To Me,’ Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald; ‘ Broadway Serenade,’ Mickey Rooney; and two of the Judge Hardy Family series, one of which is ‘ Andy Hardy Gets the Spring Feeling.’ Short subjects include further Fitzpatrick traveltalks; cartoons, all in technicolour,; .‘Passing Parade” shorts; the, ‘ Crime Does Not Pay ’ series; ‘Our Gang’, comedies; and Robert Benchley oddities. .
