DUNLOP WINS HIS SIXTH TITLE [Pee United Pkess Association.] WELLINGTON, January 4. The New Zealand chess congress was finished to-night, the championship being won for the sixth time by J. B. Dunlop (Otago). His score was 9j points out of a possible 13. He won seven games, drew five, and lost one. A. W. Gyles (Wellington) and 1. Burry (Auckland) runners-up, each scoring 9 points. Next came R. O. Scott (Wanganui) with 8 points. Other scores were; P. Allerhand (Wellington) and K. Byer (Wellington) I\, D. I. Jones (Auckland) and H. M‘Nabb (Nelson) 7, R. G. Wade (Wellington) Gi, E. H. Severne (Wellington) oh, D. Lynch (Hastings) 5, E. W. Bennett (Otago) 4 h, F. Vincent (Wellington) 4, F. K. Kelling (Wellington) 1. In the premier reserve R. A. Durham (Wellington) and W. J. Fairburn (Wellington) tied for first place with 9 points. Next came J. D. Steele (Wellington) Bi, R. G. C. Durham (Wellington) 8," R. L. Hardy (Wellington) 7, J. K. L. Webling (Wellington) 6, W. Dobson (Christchurch) 4£, W. Colo (Nelson) 4, H. P. Whitlock (Wanganui) 3i, A. S. Goldsmith (Wellington) 2h, J. Kirkwood (Wellington) 2J, and C. Brunsden (Timarn) IJ. Mrs T. G. Short (Auckland) won the women’s championship with 8 points. Next came Miss R. Burke (Christchurch) 4. Mrs F. Vincent (Wellington) 3J, Mrs Wilson (Hutt) 2J, and Mrs J. I. Goldsmith (Wellington) 2. In the New Zealand championship the two deciding games were between Severne and Gyles and Dunlop and Scott. In the game between the first two Gyles played the Sicilian Defence. He developed his game very slowly, but managed to build up an attack which resulted in the winning of a pawn. Nervousness caused him to blunder towards the end, and Severne obtained a stalemate. Scott employed the same defence against Dunlop as Gyles had against Severne, and came into the middle game with even prospects, but unsound sacrifice of material allowed Dunlop to force a win.
