In the presence of a large number of parents, the infant department presented a very fine programme of Christmas carols. Santa Claus was in atendance, and the little tots alt received books from him, while he also distributed gifts to the younger children. During the afternoon, the standard classes staged an excellent programme of carols, interesting songs, dancing, items, drill display, recitations, and a short play ,—‘The Sleeping Princess.’ Mr Ferguson, chairman of the , George Street School Committee, made reference to the improvements carried out during the year, Including the installation of a modern wireless set. He' also congratulated Mr G. M. Luke, head master, and his staff on the excellent report received by the school and on the, excellent conditions of the environs of the school. The newlyconstructed swimming pool in the Woodhaugh Gardens was an acquisition to the school, and would be used regularly by George Street School _ pupils. The Chairman then made special reference to the outstanding exhibits of class work, consisting of handwork, writing, arithmetic, and composition exercises pn view in the gymnasium. Many of these exhibits were not prepared for exhibition, but were taken from the ordinary marked class work. . , The Chairman intimated that a parents day would be held early in July, when the parents would be given an opportunity of seeing the classes at work. He thanked the parents for their support, pointing out that as a. result of their liberal response, every child was again receivin'* a book The head master reported that many of the children returned their books last year Ai order to establish classroom exchange libraries of general reading, and it was confidently expected that a "large number would be returned again next year. It was felt by all that this system of recognising the Christmas spirit was preferable to the traditional method of place awards, which caused such dissatisfaction to children, parents, and teachers. COUIMBA GIRLS’ COLLEGE At the annual break-up and pnzc-giving ceremony at Columba Girls’ College, at which Dr J. R. Elder presided, a report on all brandies of school work throughout the year was presented by Miss G. F. Gibson, the acting principal. The presentation of prizes was carried out by Mrs J. R. Elder. The speaker of the evening was Professor (i E. Thompson, who suggested to the girls methods by which they could make their studies easier. There was much written on the science of teaching, he said, but few people have even attempted a constructive work on bow to learn. that which was being taught. Intelligence,- reasoning, and application were all necessary in the process of learning. The student must find out and train herself to a methodical, reasoned style of learning—whether of the ,aural or tho visual type depended on the individual student. The drudgery of the old method of “ cramming ” was, or should be, a tiling of the past, and the student had to show application of a more reasoned kind in order to make the task of learning a pleasure and an interest, instead' of a process of weary drudgery. An interesting programme of unison songs was presented by (he girls of the schom. and items were also given by the junior and senior verse-speaking choirs Tho following was the list of awards:— Standard I.—Patsy White 1.
