SANDERS CUP TRIALS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It is with much amusement that; I have read the various letters regarding the Sanders Cup trials. All the correspondents have urged the boats not to appear at the starting line on Saturday. Why is this? In my opinion if any crew is capable of representing Otago it is up to them to prove it in the three trials to 'be sailed at the weekend. In Thursday’s issue “ Public Opinion ” suggested it would be a blot against Mr Pettit’s sportsmanship to appear on Saturday. When the race at Ravensbourne was declared no race, and also when Lynette was disqualified in the third race, no complaint cam© from Mr Pettit, so why shoudl he complain when the association’s decision favours him for a change? The trials are to select the boat which stands most chance of winning the cup, so this should be more important to the public than whether one crew has received an unjust deal or not. In Sunday’s race Lynette beat Val by 12min. This is not a very impressive showing fcfr the boat which your correspondents wish to represent the province. If we do not see Val at the starting line on Saturday we must draw the conclusion that she is afraid of a repetition of Sunday’s race.—l am, etc., Plat the Game. November 30.
