COLLAPSE OF STEEL SPANS
THE MISHAP AT HAREWOOD HANGAR WH&LE TO BE REBUILT [Pes United Peess Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, December 1. The steel framework at the Air Force station at Harewood, which collapsed! on Tuesday, will he completely dismantled and rebuilt. Mr Semple, after inspecting the damaged building to-day, said! the adlapse was caused by an error made during the rigging of the steel spans which form the roof, and full responsibility had been accepted by the sub-contractors. The end bracings bad not been delivered, but the company, in an endeavour to expedite the work, had gone ahead with the erection of the intermediate spans in‘ the roof. Two of the guy ropes had parted, and the strain thrown on one span caused! its collapse, and this span had brought the remainder down with it. The greater portion of the steel will be shipped to Wellington and straightened. It is considered that the steel will not lose any of its stability in this process, and! that it can be used again. The damage is estimated at £I,OOO.
