The Governor-General (Viscount Galway) left Auckland yesterday morning and paid a visit of inspection to the Ngaruawahia military camp. Later he travelled to Taupo for a few days’ trout fishing. His Excellency is expected to return to Wellington on- Wednesday next after a brief visit to Hastings. Mr W. M. M'Elrea left this morning for the North Island. Mr H. A. Price (Gore) and Mr John Macdonald (Invercargill) were through passengers for Wellington by the express from tho south this morning. The appointment of Mr W. S, Wheeler as Consul for Portugal at \\ ellington was gazetted last night. Mr George A. Thomson, who ha« been studying at Sydney University for the past three years, has passed the final examination for the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Science. At last night’s meeting of the Harbour Board a welcome. was .extended to Mr P. E.' Tyson, who recently returned after an absence of six months in Auckland. _ ... A resolution recording aprpeciation.' of the work of the late Mr B. Duncan was passed at last nigbt’g meeting of the Harbour Board. In moving a vote of sympathy to Mr Duncan’s relatives, the chairman (Mr W. Begg) Said that Mr Duncan’s long period of service was a record of service to humanity and to the city. . “Since our last annual meeting the association has lost two of its well- i known and greatly-respected members, ■ stated Mr C. V. Smith during the course of his presidential address to the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association last night. “ I refer to the deaths of Mr James Evans and Mr Robert Duncan. No man played a bigger part in the work of the association than Mr Evans. For many years he took an active part in executive work, and twd vears ago was president. One always admired hie power of quick decision, bis foresight, and I know of no .man who, throughout hks life, so steadfastly maintained the courage of his convictions. During the last few weeks of his illness he set an example of courage that was almost unreal, Mr Duncan a sudden death came as a great shock. Although he would never accept the office of president, he was vice-president for two years, and a member of the executive for several years. He brought to association matters tbat same Scottish shrewdness that made him.so successful in business, and to it he added a genial personality that endeared him to all with whom he was associated.
