HOW FAR AND HOW FAST?

TO THE EDITOR. Sir—On returning from abroad in August, 1937, Hon. W. Nash gave u« some details of Soviet planning.ofindustrial undertakings and price fixing., Questioned on the possibility ot the introduction of Russian methods into New Zealand, he was rather uon-committal in reply. In two short years since, however, we have actual experience of Socialist methods in marketing, in industry, and in import control, sufficient to satisfy the most exacting regarding the ultimate objective of pur (alleged) Labour Government. Condition* in manufacturing, importing, and business circles are rapidly becoming impossible for the private firm or individual, and it is being brought home to us that the Leader of the Opposition was right when, he said that the Government’s intention was to overthrow the capitalist system, so that it could be said it was a failure. Rapid as has been the march towards Socialism, one finds on reference to certain of your “ extreme ” contemporaries that dissatisfaction, is rife among certain sections of Socialist and Communist supporters of the Government, at its present. attitude. The visit of two Ministers of the Crown to Christchurch last week in an attempt to smooth out differences inside the party gives increased importance to these writings; and we might well consider, at this juncture, what will happen in New Zealand if the “ left should gain control.—l am. etc..
