MAYFAIR
On its return season to Dunedin the Jack Hulbert comedy feature, ‘ Paradise for Two,’ is to conclude to-night at the Mayfair. It heads an outstanding double bill. The programme is completed by ‘ Fisherman’s Wharf,’ which stars Bobby Breen. In his latest production for Alexander Korda Jack Hulbert is seen as a Parisian millionaire, and he has associated with him the Hollywood actress, Patricia Ellis. SUBMARINE PATROLS. Because “ birds of a feather ” proved the old adage again on the 1 Submarine Patrol ’ set at Twentieth Cen-tury-Fox, the task of Lieutenant-com-mander Valentine Wood, U.S.N. (retired), technical director for the film, was considerably lightened. A survey showed that nearly 90 per cent, of the 1,000 odd extras working in the film as navy men were ex-servicemen, and a distinct navy atmosphere pervaded the set. Ironically enough, in the presence of so many navy men the story of 1 Submarine Patrol,’ which is to be opened at the Mayfair to-morrow, is the amazing drama of a branch of the service once ridiculed by old-time officers of the regular navy—the never-tokl-before story of the “ splinter fleet.” These were the flimsy, wooden submarine chasers, manned by the strangest, most ill-assorted crews of civilian odds and ends ever to board a fighting ship—men who joined up for a soft berth and found real danger that taught them to stand and deliver. Richard Greene, Nancy Kelly, George Bancroft, Preston Foster. Slim Summerville. and John Carradine are among the supporting players. Constance Bennett is the star of ‘ Service De Luxe,’ the associate feature.
