SINKING OF THE COURAGEOUS
MR CHURCHILL’S TRIBUTE TO CREW EVERY REASON TO BELIEVE SUBMARINE DESTROYED (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 20. (Received September 21, at 2.5 p.m.) Mr Winston Churchill, in the House of Commons, stated that the commanding officer of the Courageous went down with his ship. There was every reason to believe that the attacking submarine had been destroyed. “ The public have already learned from the survivors the graphic story of the gallantry of the ship's company,” ho said. “ 1 should like to express, on behalf of the Government and the Admiralty, profound sympathy with those bereaved.”
