[From Our Correspondent.] GENERAL, . Basketball and football teams and supporters from tho new Clutha Valley School at Clydevale visited Lawrence on Monday afternoon to play the corresponding teams of the Lawrence Dis-, trict High School. The results were wins for both Lawrence teams at basketball 20-12, and at football 10-0. The Roxburgh Returned Soldiers’ Committee has decided to cancel its reunion, which was to have been held on September 23. The following teams will represent .Lawrence in the South Tnapeka seven-a-side tournament to be held at Beaumont on Saturday:—Seniors: J. Cavanagh, B. Percy, J. Stuart, R. Cotton, N. Guthrie, W. Webster, L. Thompson, P. Mathias, and F. M'Neilly. Junior A team: T, Hogg, W. Cotton, E Robson, G. Weston, IN. Elliott, B. Cotton, and W. Winchester. Junior B team: J. Christophers, I. Hogg, P. Childs, J. Childs, E. Dnthic, A. Guthrie;, and W. Arnott. Schoolboys: G. Cruickshanks, R. Hoilands, J. Knight, A. Hicks, K. Edie, J. Morris, and C. Thompson. Twelve persons attended the initial meeting of the Lawrence Drama Club, and it is hoped that about 20 at least will he able to link up with the organisation. Meetings are being held on tho next eight or nine Thursdays. Mr A. G. Worthington, of the Association for Country Education, who is making Beaumont his centre, is organising and instructing clubs at Waitahuna, Lawrence, Tapanui, Heriot, Miller’s Fiat, and other places in the district. In due course it is hoped to present » play, or plays, and further meetings will be held. Satisfactory progress on the reconditioning of the water mains in tho borough continues to be made. The main most recently reconditioned in Peel street is over 70 years old, and its general condition and contents demonstrate the need for this work. It is considered that two more weeks will see the work nearly completed. PERSONAL. Mr Alf. Ryan, of Waitahuna, has left for New Guinea, where he will take up a position with a gold-mining company. Mr Brian O’Donnell, liaison officer of tho Labour Department, visited Lawrence on Tuesday in connection with the employment of men under tho various schemes within the district. Messrs Morland and Rowe, inspectors of the Education Department, are visiting Lawrence this week. LAWRENCE MAGISTRATE’S COURT A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held at Lawrence on Monday afternoon. The Shell Co. of New Zealand proceeded against William Brown (Milton), who did not appear, for £6O 11s 4d on a judgment summons. Judgment was given for the full amount, with solicitor’s/fee, £2 2s, in default 60 days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended provided 10s weekly is paid. Appearing on a charge of using insulting language in a public place at JVaipori, Richard John Cotton was lined the amount of costs 16s, witnesses’ expenses £1 18s. and service cost 10s. Isabella Allan’s (Mr Finlayson) application for a residence site was adjourned by the court to October 16. An application by the New Gabriel’s Gully Goldmining Co. Ltd. for special alluvial claim was adjourned to October 16. Albert Hellyer (Mr R. C. Moore) applied for a residence site.—Adjourned to October 16. BEAUMONT W.D.F.U. Beaumont W.D.F.U. held a very sue-, cessfui concert and dance in the Coronation Hall. Visitors were present from Ettrick, Miller’s -Flat, Evan’s Elat, and Tnapeka West. . The Miller’s Flat branch generously helped largqly with the programme, the party giving two short plays, while Mrs Smellie’s singing gave great pleasure. The junior school children under Miss M‘Knight gave some very enjoyable items—playlet, ‘ The Happy Man ’; dance, ‘ The Crested Hen ’; recitation, 1 The Story of Augustus Struwelpeter ’; piccaninny song, and a dialogue, 4 The Foregone Conclusion.’ The Junior Homemakers’ Club contributed three songs in costume. The Beaumont pipers gave several items, Master Jock Paterson a solo, Miss Mackenzie and Mr Beccard a duet, and the whole band two selections, while later on .in the evening Mr Beccard provided the dance music on the pipes. Other items were two violin solos by Master Peter Brook, a step dance by Miss Ngairc Beccard, two piano-accordion solos by Mr lan Dwyer, who also helped largely with the dance music, and a piano duet by Mrs Dwyer and Mrs Orchiston, Women’s Division members.
