POLICE COURT

THURSDAY. SEPTEMBER 21. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender was fined. 20s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. REMAND GRANTED. Francis Cleaver Matthews (32), who was represented by Mr 0. G. Stevens, was charged with that on August 17 and on and between August 17 and September 9 he committed the theft of sums of money totalling £36 19s 4d, the property of the Mutual Life and Citizens’ Assurance Company. Detective-sergeant Hall askedl for a remand, and stated that there would be one charge of failing to account and three charges of forgery. The accused was remanded to October 4. bail being allowed in his own recognisance of £IOO, conditional upon his reporting twice daily to the police. An application for suppression of the accused’s name was refused.
