The visitor to Devon was curious as to the meaning of a broad black mark close up to the eaves of the oldest inhabitant’s cottage. “ What does that mark stand for? ” he asked. “ Oh, that was the height of the water in the big flood of 1893.” “ Never. Why, the whole village and countryside must have been yards under water.” “ Well, it used to be about two feet off the ground, but as the dratted boys kept rubbing it out, us had to put it higher.”-
