NEW MDVE BY POLAND MAY PLACE HERSELF UNDER GERMANY'S PROTECTION LONDON, August 24. .(Received August 25, at 9.40 a.m.) The Berlin correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says it is rumoured in high circles that Colonel Beck might go to Berlin and place Poland under Germany’s protection. A similar rumour is current in London. : ITALIAN WAR PREPARATIONS A SUDDEN ACCELERATION LONDON, August 24. (Received August 25, at 8 a.m.) Italian war preparations have been suddenly accelerated. Responsible quarters aio beginning to express the fear that war is almost inevitable within days. ANXIOUS TO AVOID CATASTROPHE ROME, August 24. (Received August 25, at 10 a.m.) The calling up of further Italian reservists has been delayed in order to avoid aggravating the crisis. There is still certain optimism in Italy and no sign of alarm in the streets of Rome. Official circles do not disguise their anxiety to avoid a catastrophe.
CALM IN ROME HOPES OF PEACE ROME, August 24, (Received August 25, at 1 p.m.) Extraordinary calm reigns in Rome. .It is still hoped that war will be avoided. POLAND CALLS UP RESERVES NO GENERAL MOBILISATION LONDON, August 24. The Warsaw correspondent of the ‘ Daily Express ’ says an emergency meeting of the Cabinet has been called for 1 a.m. It has been decided to call up 500,000 more men in the next 24 hours. No general mobilisation decree has so far been issued. The total now under arms is 1,500,000. The Polish Military General Staff will sit early this morning. PASSENGER TRAINS DELAYED WARSAW, August 24. The speeding up of defence measures led to serious delays, passenger trains being engaged in the evacuation of civilians from Polish frontier districts. This caused the German Press to predict a Polish coup d’etat in Danzig. LINER ASCANIA RETURNING HOME AT ONCE MONTREAL, August 24. (Received August 25, at 10 a.m.) The Cunard-White Star Company has ordered the Ascania to return immediately. She is sailing at midnight.
