GERMANY DENOUNCED

JAPAN'S REACTIONS TO PACT “ STUNG BY THE VIPER " TOKJO, August 24. The signing of the pact resulted in violent reactions in the Japanese Press. Germany is denounced for the betrayal of an ideologic ally. It is admitted that the signature of the pact proves that the anti-Comintern Pact never was even a spiritual accord. The ‘ Hochi Shimbun ’ declares: “ The viper catcher has been stung by the viper. Japan’s great anger and indignation must be borne in silence.” The ‘Nichi Nichi Shimbun’ says: “ Italy may follow Germany and advise Japan to trail behind, but the Soviet Government and the Comintern are the same, although differently named. Why waste time quibbling? Let us return to Japan’s policy of autonomy and independence.” The ‘ Asahi Shimbun ’ says Japan must restart with a clean sheet. Admiral Kanazawa, the navy spokesman, refrained from definite comment until the international situation has cleared. He said that, speaking personally, he welcomed the Soviet-Ger-man pact, which was causing the nations to realise the futility of reliance on others. The Japanese objective in Eastern Asia was best served through independence and self-reliance, which was the navy’s unchanged traditional policy. It did not antagonise other Powers or prevent their co-opera-tion. "WAR IS FUTILE" JUSTICE CANNOT BE OBTAINED BY VIOLENCE HOME, August 24. (Received August 25, at 10 a.m.) Speaking in quiet, earnest tones, the Pope, in his broadcast, said: “In this grave hour I must talk peace. Jesus wanted all men to be brothers. I earnestly appeal to the Governments and rulers of the peoples. Justice cannot be obtained by violence. War is futile and causes only bloodshed and destruction. We pray that the rulers will make the utmost effort for peace. The hearts of mothers and fathers are beating with ours. The whole world wants peace, bread, and work, not steel and war,”

SURVEY OF THE CAPITALS NO UNDUE EXCITEMENT PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES EVERYWHERE LONDON, August 24. (Received August 25, at 12.25 p.m.) A survey of the capitals show's that London is calip despite ominous reports flooding in from the Continent. The Berlin corresipondent of ‘ The Times’ says: Britons are leaving Germany, yet there is general confidence in Germany that there will be no war. If war does come the moral shock will be tremendous, as the public are completely unprepared for it and are unable to grasp any reason why France and Britain should fight. The streets are normal and there are no signs that Germany is on the verge of a world crisis. The Budapest correspondent of ‘ The Times’ says: People here are all confident that Hungary will be able to stand out of the conflict, which will bo all the easier if Rumania stands by yesterday’s neutrality declaration. Hungary, in the event of war, will close the Polish border, but will supply Germany with foodstuffs and take the normal precautions. The Rome correspondent of ‘The Times’ says: Although Rome appears to be calm, reports from the country show that normal precautions are being carried out. Motor lorries have been commandeered. Several ships were detained at the ports. In Paris complete calm prevails. The street lamps were darkened tonight, and gradual mobilisation is continuing. The Government lias ordered the requisitioning of all factories working for national defence.

The Brussels Cabinet, at an emergency meeting, decided on special measures to assure a supply of provisions. Soldiers have been recalled from leave and the frontiers manned.

REACTIONS IN WARSAW __ SURROUNDING OF DANZIG DENIED LONDON, August 24. (Received August 25, at 2 ji.m.) The Warsaw correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ says the imminence of war has caused public, anxiety, but there is no excitement. It is understood that the German troops concentrated on the frontiers are unlikely to be fully in position for an attack for at least 24 hours. It is estimated that 500,000 men have been called to the colours in Poland. Horses and cars have been requisitioned. Several columns of unarmed reservists in mufti and fitted with gas masks marched through Warsaw singing patriotic songs and shouting, “Long Live a Free Poland!”" All civil servants have been ordered to return to duty. The Polish War Office denies that Danzig is surrounded by a large Polish force. STIRRING UP THE POLES GERMANY'S PROVOCATIVE METHODS BERLIN, August 24. (Received August 25, at 1.30 p.m.) The German official news agency has issued a statement that the war spirit of the Polish army has reached a climax. The Polish Press is sounding -the drum of offensive war, and the army, is hourly waiting the command to strike. In these circumstances it is considered most probable that the Polish troops will lose their nerve. In reliance upon help from the Western democracies the Government is no longer master of the army decisions. Alarming reports are pouring in from all parts of the country, leading to the sure conclusion that the local commanders are no longer obeying Warsaw’s orders but are determined to march on their own responsibility. This statement is considered ominous, as it is almost identical with similar statements prior to the German coups in Austria and Czecho-Slovakia.

GERMANS IN THE FREE CITY POLAND WILLING TO CONSIDER GRIEVANCES WARSAW, August 24. (Received August 25, at 1.30 p.m.) Official quarters are not concerned over Herr Foerster’s new status. It is stated that Poland would l not agree to an Anschluss, but hereafter would not place difficulties in the way of the free cultural development of Germane in the Free City, provided the Polish minority rights are respected. In the light of these principles the Government considers Danzig’s form of government is of secondary importance. The shops are crowded with people seeking gas masks and commodities. A Government broadcast exhorts the population to keep calm. Adequate supplies will be available for all. It is impossible now to buy first-aid sets. POPE TO MAKE PEACE APPEAL . ROME, August 24. (Received August 25, at 8 a.m.) The Pope is broadcasting an important speech advocating peace. GERMAN TRAINING SHIP TO ANCHOR AT DANZIG DANZIG, August 24. (Received August 25, at 11 a.m.) It is officially announced that the German navy’s training ship Schleswig Holstein will anchor at Danzig to-mor-row at 8 a.m.
