ROADS ALL CLEAR

SURFACES IN POOR CONDITION POTHOLES ON MOUNT CARGILL Owing to the milder temperature of the past few days, the snow which has been clogging up a number of roads has more or less disappeared and now all routes inland are clear. Perhaps the road which suffered the most owing to the heavy falls of snow was that between Middlemaroh and Outram, the surface of which is in a very bad st&te, being cut up and very soft. Earlier in the week chains were necessary when negotiating it, and the position has not materially improved since, owing to rains and the continual seepage of snow water from the sides, for there is still a quantity of snow lying about.

Mount Cargill is now practically clear of snow,:. t therq;.being only two or three' embankments : ‘left on shady bends, but if the motorist is not now troubled with the hazards of snow he is experiencing the unpleasantness of heavy fogs, which 1 have been swirling about the summit all the week, completely covering the road and reducing visibility to a chain or so; The continued spell of bad weather over the past few months has played havoc with the road over the hilltop. The surface is broken and pitted with potholes, some of huge dimensions. Continued traffic aggravates the position, for these breakages in the bitumen surface are widening with the passing of each day. The worse section is from near the city boundary to the water trough, and when the weather improves there will be considerable repair . work to be undertaken by the Highways Board.
