COMPETITIONS IN LAST STAGES TWO DECISIONS REACHED THIS MORMIH6 To-day is the last judging day of the thirty-eighth annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society. Four classes were held this morning, and two this afternoon. Of the morning’s hearings two final judgings were announced, while in the other two classes recalls, to appear on to-night's programme, were notified. This afternoon the musical comedy selection chosen by the competitors in the Gilbert and Sullivan contest were heard in His Majesty’s Theatre, the hearing occupying the whole of the afternoon. Burns Hall was similarly occupied with the hearing of the children’s duet in character. . An alteration is announced in th* special awards published in the ‘ Star ■ last night. The winner of Messrs Charles Begg ' and Company’s vocal scholarship for ladies is Miss Mama Payne, and not Miss Nanna Newey. This morning’s results: — « INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Mr Paul Schramm. PIANO SOLO, under 11, ‘ A Song in a' , Gondola ’ (Dunhill). Second section. Barbara Dear, 89 points ... ... . ... 1 Lois Kilgour (Oamaru), 87 points 2 Rendall Miller, 86 points ... 3 - Highly commended: Thelma. Stone. Also competed: June : Afigelo (Balclutha), .Claire . There were eight in this section, the following being recalled * Elizabeth M'Keowen and Billy Loan. CLOSING EVENTS. At His Majesty’s Theatre this evening an outstanding programme will ba presented. A pianoforte recital will ba given by Mr Paul Schramm, the noted pianist, including Beethoven’s ‘ Appassionata ’ Sonata, a modern group consisting of two of Debussy’s works, ‘ Tha Valley of Bells ’ by Maurice Ravel, and ‘ March Grotesque ‘ by Prokofieff, and a /bracket of Chopin’s works, ‘Nocturne in D Flat Major ’ a ‘ Waltz in G Flat Major,’ ‘ Three Ecossaiscs,’ and the popular ‘ Polonaise in A Fla* Major.’ The programme will include the competition for the Barling Rosa Bowl, when the winners of the soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto, tenor, baritone. and bass solos will compete. Tha finalists in the Gilbert and Sullivan contests will also be heard, together with the finalists in the character sketches and ladies’ humorous recitations. This is a rare opportunity for the public to hear Mr Paul, Schramm. The festival will close to-morrow, when,' a matinee will be held, commencing at 2.15. At night the festival will conclude with the grand demonstration concert, the programme containing tha choicest items of the festival by tha first prize winners. The box plan ia open at Charles Begg and Co. s, and seats can be reserved at the theatre tomorrow afternoon.
