CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION

HOURS OF EMPLOYEES ;:5 (Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 24. An amendment to the Centennial Exhibition Order, 1939, lias been gazetted, modifying the original order. The original order provided that the eight hours which constituted a day’s work must be worked consecutively, except for a meal interval of at least three-quarters of an hour. Some awards, however, provide that the hours of work may be arranged to suit the nature of the business, while the exhibitors will no doubt desire to arrange the daily hours so that they fit in with the busiest periods of public attendance. The amendment to the order, therefore, while preserving the eight-hour day and five-day or five-and-a-half-day week, allows the daily hours to be spread, and permits Sat Urdus’, which will be the busiest day of the week, to be regarded as an ordinary working day, in which case the day or halLday off will require to be given on some other day of the week. The original order also provided for extra payment for work done before 8 a.m. or after 10.30 p.m. The order has, however, been amended to preserve the elasticity of existing awards in respect of hours of employment of nightwatchmen, cleaners, etc. The order provides for double-time rates for work 1 done on whole holidays, but this has been amended to make it clear that such extra payment is not required to be made for work done on Saturday, where the five-day week (Monday to Friday) is in operation, unless a special whole holiday prescribed by the Act, award, or agreement covering the workers concerned falls on such day.
