There is an outburst of anger by the French Press towards England, owing to the English Attache at Berlin attending the dinner of the Victoria Guards (German), of which Queen Victoria was recently made honorary colonel, and also at Her Majesty presenting Prince Bismark with a portrait of herself. • • • # PRINCIPAL RAINY. On arriving in Dunedin Principal Rainy was met by the Rev. D. Stuart. Rev. J. ’ Gibb, and other prominent members of the Presbyterian Church. School teachers will learn with satisfaction that the Government is of opinion that they should be brought under the provisions of the Civil Servants Reform Act, 1886, with regard to retiring allowances. The Minister of Education promises to work out a scheme for the purpose. SINKING OF THE CENTENNIAL. The steamer Centennial _ (formerly the Albion) sank in a collision with the collier Kanahooka in Sydney harbour. All on board were saved. Tho Centennial was badly holed in the bow, and in a few minutes she sank, bow first, leaving only the mastheads above water.
