ASSISTING THE HOSPITALS FEATURE OF THE BUDGET Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, August 23. An increase in the income tax, mainly designed to yield about £350,000 to assist hospitals, is a feature of the State Budget, which was introduced by Mr A. A. Dunstan in Parliament to-day. There will be no increase in the unemployment tax, which last year yielded more than the £1,840,000 estimated. It is proposed to pay higher rates of sustenance to unemployed with large families and to liberalise the permissible income regulations for men on sustenance. It was originally expected that the year would end with a surplus of £12,000, but the drought, railway losses, and other causes converted it into a deficit of £BOO,OOO. Tax increases are: Company tax, Is 10.575 d in the £ to 2s; personal taxation, 6d to 7id, rising to a maximum of Is 9Jd. Property rates range from Is 2d to 3s 4d in the £.
