JUVENILE ELOCUTION SCHOLARSHIPS CHIEF PIANO CONTEST RECALLS No classes were judged outright this morning, when the thirty-eighth annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society was continued. Recalls were announced, and with the exception of the chief piano contest these will be heard again to-night. There were two classes to the chief piano solo contest heard in the Concert Chamber, the test selection, ‘ Le Danse d’Olaf ’ (Pick-Maniagalli), and the own selection. The sight-reading test was held on Friday last. There were seven competitors in this section, the following being recalled:—-Miss Lois Manning (Christchurch) and Mr William Clarke. The elocution scholarship for boys was commenced in Victoria Hall this morning, the test selection being heard. The own selection test was taken this afternoon, and the finalists will appear in His Majesty’s Theatre to-morrow night. The own selection test in the girls’ elocution test was also taken this morning, this concluding the preliminary hearing in this important class. Results this morning were;— , VOCAL, Judge: Mr C. H. Adolph Mann. BURNS SONG, own selection, open, musical settings of words by Burns.— Mr Mann recalled Miss Muriel Laing and Mr Charles MacArthur from a class of 16. DANCING. Judge: Miss Betty Carnochan. TAP DANCING, suitable for musical comedy, without apparatus, 10 and under 14.—Two recalls were made from a class of 20, these being Pamela Page and Trevor Phillips. ELOCUTION. Judge; Mr Rupert Harvey. SCHOLARSHIP FOR GIRLS, 12 and under 16, (b) own selection.—Sixteen competed in this class, and the judge recalled the following:—Leone Cornish and Mary Hopewell. Placings will be announced to-night. INSTRUMENTAL. Judge: Mr Paul- Schramm. PIANO DUET, 12 and under 16, ‘Moon Fairies’ (Campbell).—There were 19 pairs in this class, the recalls being Jean Nelson and Lenore Smith, June M'Call and John Whitworth. EVENTS AHEAD. The star attraction at His Majesty’s Theatre to-night will he the firms’ choir contest, in which there are three entries. The programme will include piano duos, tap and classic dancing, dance duos, Burns song, and child’s action song,' -in addition to which finality will be reached in the ladies’ vocal scholarship and the girls’ elocution scholarship contests. To-morrow the first section of the Gilbert, j and , Sullivan contest will be held,’arid this should prove particularly entertaining; some excellent singing being promised. ' On Friday night an 'opportunity will he afforded of hearing Mr Paul Schramm in a pianoforte recital, and he. has selected a very entertaining programme. Particulars of this will bo found at the foot of the results of last night’s competitions. A very fine programme of competition iterhs will also he heard on Friday, and vocal finalists will compete for Mr Philip Barling’s handsome rose bowl. Patrons are reminded that the Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society will present Anthony Armstrong’s three-act thriller, 1 Without Witness,’ in His Majesty’s Theatre on Thursday. Friday, and Saturday, September 7, 8, and 9, proceeds being devoted to the funds of the Competitions Society. Box plans are now open at Charles Begg and Co. Ltd.’s.
