MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dun ediu Metropolitan Fire Board was belt yesterday, Mr W. W. Callender occupy' ing the chair. Other members preseni included Messrs W. A. Scott, T. G, Tomkins, J. Wilson, and L. G. Wilson. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The superintendent (Mr R. H. Price) reported as follows on the work done for the month : Calls Attended.—Fires, 15; chimney fires, 22;. false alarms—malicious 4, justifiable 4, automatic 14, accidental 2; total, 61. South Dunedin attended 18 calls, ißoslyn 111, Green Island 1, Mosgiel 0. None of the outbreaks attended during July could be classed as serious. Causes of Fires.—Cigarette butt, 1; defective fireplaces, 2; airing clothes over kitchen range, 1; hot ashes, 2; sack placed on hot engine, 1; short circuits, 2; sparks from copper fire, 1; spontaneous combustion, 1; petrol overflowing on to hot manifold, 1; unknown, 3; total, 15. Properties Affected. Apartment house, 1; detached sheds, 2; detached outhouses, 1; dwellings, 4; motoi; vehicles, 3; Neon sign, 1; warehouses. 3; total, 15. Chimney Fires Attended. —Central, 14; South Dunedin, 6; Roslyn, 1: Green Island, 1; total, 22. The inclement weather conditions prevailing during July caused considerable interference with the routine work. There were no cases of sickness or accident amongst the staff, which is at

full strength. The vacancy on the auxiliary staff of the South Dunedin Station caused by the resignation of Fireman J. Hossack was filled by the appointment of L. R. ißillstone, who commenced duty on July 4. The plant and appliances are in the usual good order. Inspections of theatres during performances were made on several occasions during the month, and the reports of the inspecting officers show that the regulations are being complied with. On July 12 the use of the latest “ Pyrene ” foam-making branch pipe was demonstrated to the staff of the central station. Fire drill, incorporating the use of this foam-making apparatus, was carried out by the staff of Associated Motorists’ Petrol Co., at the company’s premises. Wicklifi'e street, on July 21. An officer of the brigade was in attendance, and reported. that the drill was performed in an efficient manner. At the request of the management, an officer visited a departmental store for the purpose of demonstrating to the members of the staff the correct method of operating hand chemical fire extinguishers.
