BUTTER AND CHEESE
SUBSTANTIAL FALL IN EXPORTS TWELVE MONTHS’ FIGURES COMPARISONS WITH PREVIOUS SEASONS A substantial decrease of 19,375 tons, equivalent to 13.669 per cent., is shown in the exports of butter from the Dominion during the 12 months of the 1938-39 season ended July 31. There was a decrease of 4,110 tons, or 4,847 per cent., in the exports of cheese. Shipments of butter last month totalled 6,305 tons, compared with 6,028 tons for. July, 1938, an increase of 277 tons. For the 12 months shipments totalled 122,365 tons, compared with 141,740 tons for the 1937-38 season, a decrease of 19,375 tons. Details of the butter shipments for the last two seasons give the following comparison:—
•Includes Southampton. The figures show that there has been a large decrease in the shipments to London and an increase of about 6,000 tons in the shipments to other United Kingdom ports. Of the total exports of 122,365 tons for the 12 months, only 2,337 tons, equivalent to 1.909 per cent., went to countries other than Great Britain, compared with 5,152 tons for the 193738 season. Shipments of cheese last month were 4,662 tons,; compared with 5,301 tons for July, 1938, a decrease of 639 tons. For the 12 months exports of cheese totalled 80,673 tons, compared with 84,783 tons for the 1937-38 season, a decrease of 4,110 tons, or 4.847 per cent. Details compare as follows :
With the exception of 70 tons to “ other countries.” the whole of the cheese exported during the 12 months of 1938-39 went to Great Britain.
HEMP AND TOW LOWER JULY GRADINGS A total of 258, bales of hemp was graded for export at New Zealand ports during July, as against 814 bales in July, 1938? a decrease of 556 bales. Gradings were as follows, with those for July last year in parentheses:— Good fair, 34 (SO); high fair, 6 (48); low fair, 28 (119); common, 91 (318); reject, 95 (249); condemned, 4 (0). Gradings of tow in July totalled only 19 bales, compared with 122 bales in July, 1938. All the tow examined was graded second grade. No stripper tow or stripper slips was graded.
