TABLE TENNIS

OTAGO GAINS MAJOR TITLES ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP TO R. A. ALGEE HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY Undoubtedly the highlight of the New Zealand table tennis championships was the final of the men’s singles. The new champion, Russell Algie, proved conclusively his right to the title in a hardfought game with F. baton (Auckland). Back from the court or close up to the not Algie’s play was supreme. His recoveries at times were uncanny. Patou made a very willing and able opponent at all times, but although he came almost directly from a previous game Algie showed himself to be definitely superior. In the second sot there was little to choose between them and the game was close all the way. baton established a lead of 5-2 in the third, increasing it to 11-G, but Algie levelled the score at the higher figure. Patou continued to take the lead until the score was level agaiu at 19 and 20. baton secured the next two and the set with terrific drives. Algie established a lead early in the next set, holding it on a very narrow margin until lie won, gaining the last seven strokes in succession. both players were at the top of their form, and put up a redoubtable performance. Intense interest was manifested throughout the championships, and on Saturday night seating accommodation was at a premium. The stamina evinced by the young champion is remarkable. It will bo remembered that a fortnight ago last Friday he travelled to Wellington by air and played the same night and the next. On the Monday evening he played again, returned to Dunedin on the Tuesday, and played in the club championships next day. On the Friday and Saturday ho contested the Otago championships, concluding what must have been a very exhausting week. When it is considered that each night of play he would contest from 20 to 30 sets, this will bo realised, lie had had the best part of a week’s spell up to Friday night and was in splendid form for the finals.

Miss M. Fogarty gamed the ladies’ title from Mrs Valk in another closelyfought game. Throughout Mrs Valk took the offensive, and her drives and service were deadly, but Miss Fogarty’s greater steadiness won the title for Otago. The mixed doubles was won by W. M’Farlane and Mrs Ingham (Wellington), who beat 15. A. Algie and Miss E. Lock, this being the only occasion in which the St. Clair player was defeated.

In the semi-finals of the men’s singles M. Friend and G. Corbett (Hutt) were eliminated. Friend’s baffling technique carried him well, but he made- many mistakes, depending almost entirely on his backhand. Something spectacular was afforded by the game in which R. A. Algie defeated G. Corbett (Hutt). Beaten outright in the first two sets 21-10, 21-11, Corbett established a lead of 5 in the early stages of the third, and the game which followed provided the gallery with all they were looking for.

A game which practically monopolised the attention of the audience in the early stages of the evening was that in which F. Paton (Auckland) defeated S. Henderson. The game went the full distance, Henderson’s serve and active playing being evenly matched against the science of Paton. Henderson made a bad start in the tilth set, wjth the scoring 8-1 against him. and failed to recover. The Ladies’ Bracelet was won bv Miss E. Lock (Otago), who defeated Mrs Ingham (Wellington), while the Plate was secured by W. T. ADFarland (Wellington), who beat S. A. Bremford in straight sets. L. Murison won the boys' championship. and holds this title in addition to tiie Canterbury senior championship. He disposed of the other semi-finalist. L. Howe (Otago), in straight sots. Play was continued until well past midnight, the champion being on the door for over two hours at one time. The number of successes gained by this player held up the running of the games to some extent, and although early in the evening it was anticipated that the contest would be over at 11 o’clock, this hope was not realised.
