MILD ATTACK OF “JITTERS”

ANXIETY ON LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE EFFECT OF GERMAN “ NO COMPROMISE " CHORUS Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 18. (Received August 19, at 1.46 p.m.) The City suffered a mild attack of the jitters as a result of the German Press chorus that there would be no compromise in the negotiations over Danzig. The pressure on sterling has greatly increased, and the authorities have lost a considerable amount of gold in the efforts to hold the dollar rate. There have been large-scale withdrawals from Continental capitals for transfer to New York, owing to political nervousness and rumours of pending devaluation of sterling. Politics have dominated the stock markets. The small volume of selling on a market devoid of buyers caused a general downward tendency in prices. Prices and sales moved narrowly on the commodity market.
