SHIPPING EXPANSION
THE UNION CASTLE COMPANY REPLACEMENT PROGRAMME COMPLETED (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, August 17. One of the largest replacement programmes ever undertaken by a passenger liner company, apart from the rebuilding of the merchant fleet after the War, has been completed by the Union Castle Company with the sale of the Dunluc© Castle to breakers. Within the last four years ships equivalent to about '.‘1.000 tons gross, have been sold for breaking up and during the period 189.000 tons have been built. The management adopted the policy of ordering vessels in pairs. Delivery in 1935 of two refrigerated motor vessels was followed in 1936 by commissioning the main liners, Sterling Castle and Athlon© Castle of 25,500 tons, and in 1938 the Capetown Castle, of 27,000 tons, was delivered. These three ships reduced the time for the Southamp-ton-Capetown run by three days to 13} days, and this shortening of time necessitated the equipment of the five existing vessels of about 20,000 tons gross each with new machinery. Since 1937 four more refrigerated motor vessels for the transport of fruit have also been delivered.
