MAIN ROADS CLEAR
MOUNT CARGILL'S SLIPPERY SURFACE LIGHT SNOWFALL LAST NIGHT By midday yesterday the light ..fall of snow which took place on Ihursday night had been removed from the Mount Cargill road, but again late yesterday afternon and- evening further falls were experienced right along the top section of the highway, covering the surface to a thickness of about half an inch. The weather then cleared and a hard frost set in, the road surfact) presenting a frozen sheet to motorists this morning. However, despite the slippery , surface, the road was negotiable, provided speeding or excessive braking was not indulged in. Roadmen were busy early scattering screenings over the surface, which was a welcome expedient. Except for a few points which may not get the sun to-dayi the rest of the roadway will be free of its icy surface following the influence of sun, by midSnow also lay on the hills at the badk of the city this morning, but this, also, soon vanished upder the kindly influence of a welcome sun. Country roads into the Central Otago district are in the same conditions as reported yesterday, and no further falls of snow are recorded. The Pigroot and the Milton-Lawrence route inland are both open, although on the former there is still a considerable quantity of snow. It is not expected the Middlemarch road from Outram and the Mae-racs-Middlemaroh and Macraes-Hyde roads will be opened for some days. All other roads are clear.
