OBITUARY

MR ALFRED WASHER Tho death occurred at Sydney on August 17 of Mr Alfred Washer, who was well known as a land agent in Roslyn for many years. Born in England, ho came to Now Zealand with his parents in 1872, and was educated here. A prominent figure in local affairs, ho was elected to tho lloslyn Borough Council in 1902, and was mayor of the borough for a term. Interested in military matters, ho was an enthusiastic member of tho volunteer forces, and for sorno years was captain of tho Waknri Iliflos. Ho was a Justice of tho Peace. Leaving Dunedin some years ago, Mr Washer went into business at Timaru, and later moved to Sydney. Ho is survived by his widow, there being no family. MR GEORGE MOIR An association with • tho business community of Dunedin extending over almost half a century was severed by the death this week of Mr George Moir. Born in Aberdeen in 1849, Mr Moir arrived in New Zealand with his parents about 1870, and for a short time was employed by Messrs Sainsbury, Ellison, and Co., wholesale druggists. lu 1874 ho joined tho staff of Messrs P. Hayman and Co., serving that firm continuously for about 50 years, until his retirement some 10 years ago. Ho was particularly interested in tho work of St. John Ambulance, and gave his active support to the association for 50 years. Mr Moir was one of tho original members oh the St. John Ambulance Association and Brigade in Dunedin, and was a vice-president for 10 years. He was also a serving brother of tho Order of St. John. He was chairman of the Kaikorai School Committee for a period of 37 years, and during that lengthy period did much to promote tho welfare of the school and the district generally. A staunch upholder 1 of the Presbyterian faith. Mr Moir held office as deacon and elder in addition to superintendent of the Sunday school of the Kaikorai Presbyterian Church. He was also an elder of tho Rfislyn Presbyterian Church for tho last 21 years. He is survived by two brothers—Messrs James and Henry Moir, both of Punedin. MR L. ML WEIR, M.P.
