SEX CRIME
TOO PREVALENT AMONG YOUNG MAORIS THREE MEN SENT TO GAOL [Per United Press Association.] HAMILTON, August 3. The necessity for stern punishment in order to deter sexual crime in the Maori race was commented upon by Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court at Hamilton to-day in sentencing four young Maori men. His Honour mentioned that this class of crime was becoming too prevalent among young people of the Maori race. Three of the four prisoners were sentenced to imprisonment. Jimmy Tewiki (23). a Maori labourer, of Taumarunui, who nad pleaded guilty in the lower court to a charge of attempted carnal knowledge, was sentenced to six months. Watty Tairoa, aged 27, a Maori labourer, of Taumarunui, was sentenced to nine months on charges of attempted carnal knowledge and carnal knowledge. Paul Osborne (20), a Maori labourer, of Taumarunui, was sentenced to nine months. William Noble (32), a Maori labourer, of Tauhei, was admitted to probation for two years.
