CHINESE FOURTH ROUTE ARMY
WESTERN SUBURBS OF SHANGHAI PENETRATED SHANGHAI, July 23. (Received July 24, at 12.15 p.m.) Three thousand troops of the Chinese Fourth Route Army penetrated the western suburbs of Shanghai outside the British-manned perimeter of the International Settlenfent, and engaged the Japanese. A battle is proceeding. TRUCULENT SENTRY AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICER ATTACKED HANKOW, July 23. (Received July 24, at noon.) A Japanese naval sentry attacked and temporarily detained R. A. Baker, paymaster of tho United States gunboat Guam, for walking on the forbidden side of the street. The sentry previously insisted on foreigners removing their hats. BEATEN WITH RIFLE BUTTS BRITISH POLICE INSPECTOR SHANGHAI, July 23. (Received July 24, at noon.) The puppet Chinese police beat Mr J. Watson, a municipal police inspector, with rifle butts while he was tearing down anti-British posters. Italian marines expelled the puppet police from the Settlement.
