VARSITY A DEFEAT H. 5.0.8. The main match was that between the two leading teams, Varsity A and High School Old Boys. It was recognised that the winner of the match would in all probability win the competition. The game itself was not such a good one .as was expected, owing no doubt to the ground being on the sticky side. Varsity A on the day were the better team and fully deserved their win. Their forward line worked well together, and they took full advantage of the opportunities which came their way. The H. 5.0.8. forwards did not combine as well as usual and could not match the speed of the Varsity forwards. The H. 5.0.8. backs defended well, and both Herons, in goal for H. 5.0.8., and Moore, in goal for Varsity, gave excellent displays. The other games resulted in wins for Albany and Collegiate. VARSITY A v. H. 5.0.8. Old Boys from the start rushed play to the Varsity circle but Varsity cleared. Play was of a very even nature, but Varsity looked the more dangerous on attack. Old Boys kept up an attack for some time, but their shooting was not of the best. Yule made a good break, which went deep into Old Boys’ territory, but Hercus saved. Old Boys went on the attack, but Varsity then made an excellent combined attack which ended in B. Ryeburn passing to Aldred, who scored. The spell ended with the scores; Varsity ... 1 H. 5.0.8 0 The opening of the second spell saw Old Boys making an effort, but the speed of the Varsity forward line began to tell,,and B. Ryburn had a shot which Hercus saved, but from the rebound Ryburn made no mistake. 2-0. Immediately afterwards a pretty movement by the Varsity forwards saw Aldred score. 3-0. Old Boys were fighting every inch of the way, but after a few minutes B. B. Ryburn drew Herons from the goal and carried the ball in. 4-0. At this stage I. G. Ryburn received a knock on the head and was forced to retire. Just before the end of the game Aldred scored again. Varsity 5 H. 5.0.8 0 Messrs E. Brown and H. Sew Hoy controlled the game. ALBANY v. VARSITY B. This game saw Varsity attacking for the greater part of the first spell, but the defence of Albany stood the test, and at half-time the score was 2-1 in Albany’s favour. The second half was definitely in favour of Albany, whb had the bettc; combination. During the game the following scored:—Mong (5), and Bedford tor Albany, and Shaw and Raine for Varsity B.
Albany i 6 Varsity B 2 Mr J. Harris controlled the game,
COLLEGIATE v. TRAINING COLLEGE.
These teams met at Logan Park, and the game was very even. There was very little between them, and the fact that the Collegiate goalie was in form really saved the day for Collegiate. The ground was extremely heavy, and both teams began to tire before the finish. The final score was
Collegiate ... Training College

SECOND GRADE. Albany 4, University D 1. University C 14, YJVI.C.A. 1. Technical Old Boys 4, University E 2. LADIES' GAMES A further round of competition matches was played on very soft grounds at the Oval. The Varsity match will be played on Wednesday, The big game of the day, Otago v. College, proved a really good exhibition, despite the adverse conditions. They took a point each. King’s added a further two points by their win over Dunedin, and Momona, by defeating Brighton, gained a better position in the race for gup points. KING’S V. DUNEDIN. The Oval was not in good order and play suffered considerably. King’s early set up a strong attack and had the Dunedin defence in trouble. On occasions the latter got away, but found the defence particularly sound. Many King’s attempts missed fire on account of dropped chances and steady tackling by the Dunedin rearguard. It was hard fought, but King’s had no real difficulty to win by 4 goals to 1. MOMONA v. BRIGHTON. It was a hard struggle in the in ml and the Brighton backs gave the Purple forwards a difficult task. Time and again they repulsed well-thought-out attacks but failed to take advantage of the Momona weaknesses. The Brighton forwards again played well, but met a stiff resistance from the Momona rearguard. It was a stern battle all the way, and the whistle sounded: — Momona 1 Brighton 0 OTAGO v. COLLEGE. Oval No. 1 was not in good condition, many soft patches making it hard for players to keep their feet. It was an important match, as both needed the points. And so they went to it really bard from the initial whistle. First one, then the other attacked, but the forwards found both sets of backs particularly sound. There was much clever play, and College, whose combination was expected to turn the tide in their favour, found Otago right on the job. There were opportunities missed on both sides, and Otago, who relied more on individual effort, had difficulty in .scoring against good College tackling. It was a bright, even game all through, and time was called with the score:— Otago 2 College 2 B GRADE. West Harbour 3, Kings 2. Training College 3. Momona 0. Bounty 13, Seacliff 2. C GRADE. Carlton 9. Otago 0. Training College 5, Taieri 3,
