HUNT CLUBS

ANNUAL RAGE MEETINGS SOUTH CANTERBURY STEEPLES BURWOOD’S GOOD WIN BLACK BANNER BADLY INJURED Alter an unusually severe frost the South Canterbury Hunt was favoured with bright sunshine for its annual totalisator meeting at Washdyke on Saturday afternoon, and there was an excellent attendance. The Host and light sun afterwards made the going very greasy at several parts of the course, and the latter cut rip i-ather badly before the day’s racing was finished. This tricky going upset the chances ot several well-fancied horses, and was probably responsible for several of the spills that occurred in the three cross-country races. The presence of several Grand National Steeplechase and Winter Cup candidates added interest to the racing. Black Banner, one of the fancied candidates for the former race, fell heavily at the first fence in the South Canterbury Steeplechase and injured his near shoulder so badly that he will not be able to take his place in the big Riccarton event. The race was won by Burwood, who will have *l7lb less to carry in next month’s race.

Settlement won the only open Hat race on the programme, but in doing so appeared to interfere with Nightdress over the last 100yds, and an inquiry was held, but no action taken. The totalisator handled £11,722 10s, a drop of £554 compared with last year’s meeting.

NOTES ON THE FIXTURE [By St. Claie.J ' Only Last Link and Mount Val were solidly backed for the Hadlow Hack Hurdle, the former being £34 better fancied, and they had the finish to themselves. Last Link attempted to win all the way, and was closely followed by Gasmask to the home turn, where the field closed up, and Mount Val, who.had tailed the field for a mile, ran up into second place. Last Link had half a length advantage at the last hurdle, then Mount Val caught him and they drew right away. In a stirring finish Mount Val scored by half a head, with Bit o’ Buie four lengths away third, then Gasmask and Ballad.

Macailpein was over £2O better fancied in the Pareora Steeplechase, and ridden much better than at Waimate was in charge all the way to win easily. He was followed over the early stages by Valmy, Gaupo falling at the third fence. With five furlongs to go Harkaway joined Valmy, but neither could catch Macailpein, who won by five lengths from Harkaway, with Valmy eight lengths away third.

Cottingham was made over £IOO a better favourite than Black Banner, for the South Canterbury Steeplechase, .but bad a fall early. Black, Banner fell at the first fence and injured his shoulder badly. Pandine, Burwood and Culverden set a solid pace over the first mile, with Cottingham about six lengths further hack. Passing the stand, Pandine dropped back, and) Burwood went on from Culverden, Cottingham falling at the first fence of the stand double, and Contract running off at' the second. As they turned into the back stretch Burwood was four lengths clear from Culverden and Pandine, and, .gaining ground at each fence, was leading Culverden by three lengths at the last fence, winning comfortably bv four lengths. Top Bank was 25 lengths away awav third, with Pandine eight lengths further back fourth. Tomcat fell at the fourth fence.

Flame Queen was nearly twice as well hacked as Withdrawal for ■ the Levels Hack Handicap, end they had the finish to themselves, the favourite scoring by a narrow margin. Flame Queen was first to break a good line, but at the end of half a furlong Withdrawal had taken charge and led round the far turn from Flame Queen, Chief Lama, and Prince Flaneur. Racing across the top. Prince Flaneur joined Withdrawal a;ul they led Flame Queen and Chief Lama, but Prince Flaneur led into the straight from Withdrawal, Flame Queen, and Chief Lama. At the distance Withdrawal was in charge, but the favourite got through nest the rails and beat Withdrawal by a neck. Donadea was three lengths away third, beating Prince Flaneur by a head for third money. Lawford Lass, Neptune, aud Chief Lama were next.

Tiny Axworthy was made a good favourite for the Washdyke Trot, and beginning smartly was in a good .position at the end of three furlongs but failed to stay on. Ben Wyvis and Sabu began the best and passing the stand (three furlongs) these two were leading Marie’s Pride, Undaunted, Twist, Tiny Axworthy, and Straight. Sabu was in charge of the leading division until turning for home, where Ben Wyvis bad dropped out and Sabti was left in charge from Straight and Undaunted, with Twist, Tiny Axworthy, and MacGregor forced to go wide out. At the distance Straight challenged Sabu, but the latter hung on well and won by two lengths. Brown Tap was three lengths away third, well clear of Undaunted, Allan Wrack, and Twist.

Only five went to the post for the Tescheraaker Memorial Hunt Cup Steeplechase, aud El Caballo was made an odds-on chance, but failed to catch the locally-trained Sunny Comet. Newly Rich quickly opened up a big lead from Sunny Comet, but retired

beaten seven furlongs from home, when Sunny Comet jumped) to the front. El Caballo challenged Sunny Comet four furlongs from home, but could not get up to him, and Sunny Comet beat him by six lengths. Night wind was two furlongs away third. Pauara • jumped badly throughout, . and fell at the second last fence when half a furlong behind the leaders.

R. Register, the rider of Pauara, w r as removed to the hospital for observation. The mare Trailed right over him when she fell.

Hunting Chorus was better backed than Dancing Flame in the Pentlow Hack Handicap, this pair carrying more than half the investments on the win machine. Dancing Flame was the smartest to jump out, and quickly established a good lead from Lord Ouyen, Captain Bruce, and Hunting Chorus. At the far turn Dancing Flame was six lengths clear of Captain Bruce, with Hunting Chorus two lengths further back. Dancing Flame was three lengths in front of Hunting Chorus and Captain Bruce turning for home, and just stayed on long enough to beat Hunting Chorus by half a length. Captain Bruce was three lengths away third, then a gap to Drauoe], Prince Ruenalf, and Couutervane.

Spanish Lad was nearly £4O better favourite than Lazybones for the Claremont Handicap. From a ragged start Balmenter, Cerne Abbas, and Lazybones were slow to begin, and Nightdress and Spanish Lad were the first out. At the end of a furlong Spanish Lad had taken charge and Ted along the back from Nightdress. Lady Middleham, Silver Slipper, and Silver Streak. At the far turn Spanish Lad was a length in front of Lady Middleham, Silver Slipper, Nightdress, and Lady Graceful, with Travenna moving up. and Lady 'Middleham challenged Spanish Lad inside the distance. Settlement joined Spanish Lad 100yds from the post, and heat him home by a length, with Lady Middleham three lengths away third: then Lazybones. Silver Slipper, Nightdress, grid* Silver Streak,
