July 23. (Received July 24, at 11 a.m.) In the final of the men’s singles at the Longwood Bowl tournament Quist defeated Mako, 6-1. 6-2, 6-4. ;• In the doubles Quist and Crawford ■' defeated Mako and Parker by default. Mako was suffering from a cold, which settled in his back. -Quist is the first foreigner to win the historic Longwood Bowl since Gerald - Patterson won in 1925. Quist was never in danger, as be ran Mako round the court, scoring placements at will. CUBA TO MEET AUSTRALIA HAVANA, July 23. SHIPYARD OF ARMADA One of the most perfect natural harbours on the Basque Coast is the port of Pasajes, a few miles from the French frontier, famous for its shipyards in the sixteenth century, when It Furnished a number of galleons for ■ the “ Invincible Armada.” The winding channel between two bluff cliffs, which is the only entrance to the harbour, lets no glimpse of it be seen from the sea, although anyone on the cliff commands a wonderful view for miles. Here the fortress of Santa Isabel has stood guard since tho days when the " Armada was being built. Some little distance along, to the right of the ferry Pasajes, the one street broadens into a tiny square. Here stands the best-known monument of Pasajes. “ Victor Hugo’s house,” where the eminent writer stayed for a few months in 1843 at the .beginning of bis exile. He lived in Spain as a child with his mother, a Royalist from La Vendee, until the return of the Bourbons after Waterloo, and it is upon his childish recollections of Spain that his famous works on Spanish themes are based; tho dramas of Ilernnni (the name borrowed from a mountain village not far from Pasajes) and Buy Bias, a number of poems in ‘ Los Orientalos ” and some of his most charming works.
