BASKETBALL

TRAINING COLLEGE A v. ALBANY

Thematch betwe.en Training College A and Albany 1. was awaited with great interest, since Albany not only held the Tournament Banner, but had gone undefeated through the season except for their match against College in last Saturday’s tournament, while Training College in the main competition had lost only to Albany. College scored l the first goal after a fine passing movement, and both sides then settled down to a fast game, where every point was evenly contested E. Sinclair’s excellent work in defence npset the strong College combination in goal, and for a while College “ shoots ” resorted to a longer higher pass, which Albany’s good defence was often able to intercept.

The centre passing was excellent on both sides, but College here were slightly superior, intercepting, handling very firmly, and opening and dodging excellently. L. Scott’s strong work made her stand iut in a very fine three. College defence were successful for the most part in keeping Albany a good way from the goal. In the first half a very strong College defence saved again and again, and just before halftime R. Parke, for College, got in a long shot from the very edge of the circle. At half-time the score was 9-8 in favour of Albany. When play began again College forged ahead, putting on jiace, while Colleg-a shoots, shortening their pass, were now successful. College defence played even better, while J. M‘Lan proved herself perhaps the best defence in Dunedin. Albany were very quick to use a back pass to good advantage, and continued to gain tremendous territory with a pass on the run. College, however, maintained a steady lead or three or four until an injury which caused a stoppage of play three minutes before time. During the final three minutes both sides, put out of their stride by the break, and feeling the strain of excitement, made mistakes, but the pace was very fast indeed, and there were some fine movements and interactions. Albany made a great spurt and added several goals, but when time was called Training College had won by one point—l 7-16. Shooting and handling on both sides were very good. Mrs M'Aughtrie’s refereeing in a very fast, hotly-contested game was excellent. Y.W.C.A. v. KIWI. This game did not produce the standard of basketball expected. Play was even and fast, but neither sets of attacks played their usual attractive game. Y.W.C.A. were superior in field work, but the shooting on both sides was not up to the usual standard. Halftime score was 8-6 in Kiwi’s favour. The second half saw very Y.W.C.A. M. Whittington ployed an outstanding game. The final score was Kiwi 19. Y.W. C. A. 18. Miss S. G. Foster ably controlled the game. ROSLYN v. O.G.H.S. School played a remarkably good game against a team whose shooting third had a great advantage in height. Play in the other two thirds was evenly contested, with many quick passing movements on both sides. In the first spell. Roslyn forwards missed a number of chances, whereas School forwards were very accurate, bringing the score quickly from 5-2 to 10-9 at half-time. In the second half, the tall Roslyn 1 a inwards dominated the play, it being literaly impossible for the School defence to intercept their high passes, though they made valiant attempts. The School centres played excellently, with B. Mndigan responsible for some brilMiss L. Scott controlled the game. B GRADE TRIAL.
