LONG DISTANCE CYCLING
AUCKLAND Tl WELLINGTON YOUNG RIDER BREAKS RECORD I Per United Press Association.; WELLINGTON. July 22. Owen Barnard, 19-year-old member of the New Plymouth Amateur Cycling Club, arrived at the G.P.0., breaking the previous cycling record between Auckland and Wellington by 1 hour and Brain. He covered the distance in 35 hours' llmin, against Gordon Lukey’s 36hrs 19min in 1934. He was escorted into the city by a number of local cyclists, who went out to meet him, and at Kaiwarra a traffic officer joined in leading the way and giving Barnard a clear run bv the use of his siren up Feathcrston street to the Post Office, where the cyclist was met by a large crowd, including officials. Barnard stopped twice on the journey—half an hour at Waitara, and 25 minutes at Waverley, where he secured his only sleep. Apart from the cold the conditions were excellent, with no rain. Barnard took up cycling last January. Apart from doing 100 mile.s each week-end for some time, he did nothing to prepare himself for the trip. He experienced no difficulties, and apart from a couple of mild spills and the chain of the machine coming off on Paekakariki Hill, there were no untoward incidents at the Wellington end.
