VARSITY A DEFEAT H. 5.0.8. The main match was that between the two leading teams, Varsity A and High School Old Boys. It was recognised that the winner of the matcl* would in all probability win the competition. The game itself was not such a good one as was expected, owing no douht to the ground being on the sticky side. Varsity A on the day were the better team and fully deserved their win. Their forward line worked well together, and htey took full advantage of the opportunities whichi came their way. The H. 5.0.8. forwards did not combine as well as usual and could not match the speed of the Varsity forwards. The backs defended well, and both Hercus, in goal for H. 5.0.8., and Moore, in goal for Varsity, gave excellent displays. _ The other games resulted in wins fo? Albany and Collegiate. VARSITY A v. H. 5.0.8. Old Boys from the start rushed play to the Varsity circle but \Tarsity; cleared. Play was of a very even nature, but Varsity looked the more dangerous on attack. Old Boys kept up an attack for some time, but their shooting was not of . the best. Yule made a good break, which went deep into Old Boys’ territory, but Hercus saved. Old Boys went on the attack, but Varsity then made an excellent combined attack which ended in B« Ryeburn passing to Aldred, who scored. The spell ended with the scores; Varsity ... ... ... 1 H. 5.0.8. ... 0 The opening of the second spell sawi Old Boys making an effort, but the speed of the Varsity forward line began to tell, and B. Ryburn had a shot which Hercus saved, but from the rebound Ryburn made no mistake. 2-0. Immediately afterwards a pretty movement by the Varsity forwards saw; Aldred score. 3-0. . Old Boys were fighting every inch of the way, but after a few minutes B. B. Ryburn drew Hercus from the goal and carried the ball in. 4-0. At this stage I. G. Ryburn received a knock on the head and was forced to retire. , Just before the end of the game At* dred scored again. Varsity 5 H. 5.0.8 0 Messrs E. Brown and H. Sew Hoy controlled the game. ALBANY v. VARSITY B. This game sawe Varsity attacking fo*> the greater part of the first spell, but the defence of Albany stood the test, and at half-time the score was 2-1 in Albany’s favour. „ . . The second half was definitely m favour of Albany, _ who had the better combination. During the game the fol* lowing scored:—Mong (5), and Bed* ford for Albany, and Shaw and Raine for Varsity B. Albany ... ... 6 Varsity B 2 Mr J. Harris controlled the game, COLLEGIATE v. TRAINING COLLEGE. These teams met at Logan Park, and the game was very even. There wa* very little between them, and the fact that the Collegiate goalie was in 'form really saved the day for Collegiate. The ground was extremely heavy, and both teams begon to tire before th« finish. The final score was;— Collegiate 2 Training College 1 REFEREES’ EXAMINATION. During the afternoon Mr_E. Brown was under examination, and it has been announced that he was successful in passing the A grade New Zealand examination. SECOND GRADE. Albany 4, University D 1. University C 14, Y.M.C.A. 1.
