WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Roxburgh Branch. Mrs Waters presided at the monthly meeting of the Roxburgh Institute, held on July 12. The motto was, “ VVe get out of life what we put into it,” and the roll call, “ Sing, _ say, or a penny pay.” The competition—marmalade resulted: Miss Doreen Packer 1, Mrs Rae 2, Mrs Sandes 3. A humorous play, well acted by Mrs M‘Knight and Mrs TamMyn, was much appreciated. Mrs A. Deans (Millers Flat) gave an interesting demonstration on rug making, and had on view some attractive work, an outstanding piece being a bath mat made from binder twine and wool crochet. Mrs Graham spoke on the Country Women’s Court at the Centennial Exhibition. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Graham, Frayer, Allen, and Misses Rees, and M'Mnhon.

Mosgiel Branch. The Mosgiel Women’s Institute hold its monthly meeting on July 17, Miss Swallow presiding. The motto was: "Never miss an opportunity to hear something beautiful.” The speaker for the evening was Rev. E. P. Simpson, who gave a most interesting talk on ‘ Ancient History of the Maori Race.’ Miss M'Millan sang two Maori songs, which were much enjoyed. The competition was won by Mrs Carter, Hostesses were Mrs J. Prosser and Miss A. M'Gregor. Tomahawk Branch. The Tomahawk branch held its July meeting in Gleneairn Hall on Thursday evening, July 5. Mrs R. 13. Mathieson welcomed visitors and all members present. The motto for the month was: “ The beauty of life is. truth; its deepest happiness is . found in service, its greatest joy_in, giving, its triumph" in love.” The roll call was " A Parcel to Cost 6d.” to be given to market table, proceeds thereof for institute. An interesting demonstration on the naking of fancy cushions was given by vlrs Taber. A competition, " A plate )f six pikelets,” was won by Mrs Simon I, Mrs Mathiesbn 2. Airs Mathers and Mrs Dickson 3 (equal). An amusing balloon'gamo was won by Mrs Mathioson’s team; addressing an envelope competition, Mrs Williams 1; “shopping” game, Mrs Smith 1. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames ißiach, Mathiesbn, Mathias, Reynolds, md M'Donald.
