LATE SPORTING

BIG TENNIS TRYING OUT QUIST AND CRAWFORD EXPERIMENTAL DOUBLE (Independent Cable Service.) V "boston, July 21. (Received July 22, at noon.) Considerable interest was expressed in tenuis circles when it became known that Quist and Crawford intend to play in the doubles at Seabright tournament next week, although Quist may not play in the singles. , Mako and Parker and Mulloy and Doeg, who are competing in the doubles at the present tournament here, are considered “ experimental teams ’ which the American Davis Cup Committee is testing out. These combinations are also expected to compete at Scabright, as well as Cooke and Higgs It is felt that Hopman, in sending Quist and Crawford into various eastern matches as doubles against combinations from which the American doubles team will be chosen, shows that he has fairly definitely determined, to name Quist and Crawford for the doubles for the impending most important Davis Cup contests, despite the fact that he used Quist and Bromwich earlier in the North American season. It is felt that only a bad showing by Quist and Crawford here and at Seabright would make Hopman revert to the Quist and Bromwich combination. In the quarter-final Crawford and Quist defeated Norman Nickel and Frank Froehling (Chicago), 8-G, 6-4 In the mixed quarter-final Nickel and Eunice Dean (Texas) defeated Crawford and Mrs Virginia Rice-Johnsou, 6-2, 6-4. In the doubles Mako and Parker defeated Doeg and Mulloy, 6-3, 6-3. These four are regarded as the experimental pairs for the Davis Cup. Quist defeated Low, 6-0, 6-3, 6-3, and now enters the finals. Quist never gave the American a chance. TURF IN ENGLAND LONDON, July 21.
