OBITUARY

MISS SHACKLEFORD Particularly well known to the members of the nursing and medical professions for her outstanding personality and devotion to duty, Miss L. A. Shackleford passed away last week in her eightieth year. As assistant to Dr F. S. Batchelor, and his father before him, she was also well known and highly respected by a large section of the community. She was a woman of great loyalty to her profession and of steadfast character, and was regarded as an outstanding nurse. She will bo remembered by most as the nurse of the late Dr F. Batchelor, with whom she began her professional career, and she was closely associated with him in all bis work, much of which was carried out at Prospect House, up to the time of his death. She continued her same faithful service with Dr Stanley Batchelor, and had a record of over 50 years’ service with father and son. Kindly and sympathetic, she inspired her patients with courage and confidence, and her strength of character, combined with her generosity, made her a reliable confidant of young and old. A foundation member of the Trained Nurses’ Association, she served on the early councils of that body for a number of years. . .She was also a foundation member of the Otago Women’s Club, in which she was a familiar figure for many years.. For 65 years she was a member of All Saints’ Church, and sang in the choir for over 50 years. She retired from her professional work five or sax years ago.
