Rangitata, Auckland, August 24, London. WAR CASUALTIES. Some time ago the ‘ Sydney Shipping List ’ published casualty statistics for the Spanish and Chinese',wars, compiled by Mr Carl Christensen, of Copenhagen. Mr Christensen has now brought these statistics up to the end of last February, and in view of the uncertain times the figures arfe very interesting. At the end of February the total casualties in both wars were 316; made up of 197 partial losses and 119 t total losses, aggregating 278,726 tons. gross. Losses by torpedoes, < mines, etc., total seven partial losses, and 35 total losses, or 99,527 tons gross. Partial losses by aircraft, number 184 and total losses 57, the total.amount being 129,758 tons gross. During the two months, January and February, the Spanish war was responsible for 37 partial losses and 13 total losses, aggregating 35,443 tons gross. It is estimated that the loss involved in both wars at the end of February amounted to between £6,250,000 and £6,500,000 for physical damage and loss by hostilities, while if Josses by confiscation, detention, etc., be included the figure would be increased' by at least another million and a-quarter poundsIt is interesting to note the preponderant percentage of tonnage lost by aircraft attack. In the Spanish affair 97 per cent, of the partial losses were caused by aircraft, and of the total losses 65 per cent. were, caused by aircraft. . With" the Spanish Ships lost, 18 out of 39 were accounted for oy gunfire, but out of. 25 British total Josses only two were due to gunfire. .France, with, six total losses,, had five aircraft losses. Losses by other nations vary, but on the whole aircraft seem to have been the greater destructive force. This would seemingly indicate that aircraft in general warface would be more effective than gunfire, and torpedoes, but it must be remembered that the Spanish naval forces were very weak as compared with other leading Powers.
