UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO
MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the council of the University of Otago, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), Messrs J. Wallace, F. W. Mitchell, L. D. Ritehie, A. Steel, H. P. Kidson, W. R. Brugh, J. Robertson, Sir James Allen, Dr Stanley Batchelor, Dr Carmalt Jones, Dr R. J, T. Bell, Dr James Fitzgerald, and Miss M. W. May. APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATION. The following reappointments, recommended by the Professorial Board, were approved:—Professors Carmalt Jones, Jack, Lawson. Thomson, Ramsay, and Souter, and Dr Holloway as members of the Library Committee; Professors Andrew, Dodds, and Sopor as members of the Board of Control: and Professor Carmalt Jones and Mr J. M. Paterson as members of the Discipline Committee. Mr H. IT. Ferguson was reappointed the council’s representative on the Vocational Guidance Association. It was resolved to reappoint the various committees of the council as at present constituted, except that Dr Lawson takes the place on the Tutorial Classes Committee of Professor Adams, who notified the council that he did not desire to be reappointed. The secretary of the W.E.A. wrote stating that the association had nominated Mr J. T. Paul, Dr Souter, and Mr E. W. Wilson as its representatives on the Committee for Adult Education. The chancellor, vice-chancellor, and registrar were appointed as representatives of the council at the conference of colleges to be held at Wellington on Julv 27. M iss M. I. Crowe forwarded her resignation from the staff of the Association of Country Education as from August IA. she having been appointed to the statf of the lowa State College. —The resignation was accepted, and
the council expressed its appreciation of the valuable service rendered by Miss Crowe. It was resolved, on the recommendation of the Finance and Medical Committees, to make a grant not exceeding £SO towards the expenses of a home science exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition. The Works Committee recommended the installation of -a new boiler and cistern in connection with the hot water supply at St. Helens Hostel, also that certain other work be carried out,— Approved. The bon. secretary of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Association wrote asking the council to consider the establishment of classes in geography up to M.A. standard.—deferred to the Professorial Board.
