Sir J. Brennan, who has been on tho staff of the Registrar of Births, Beathp, and Marriages at Dunedin for the last 13 years, left to-day on transfer to tho Head Office, Wellington. , Mr J. T. Paul was a passenger by the through express to-day, being bound for Wellington en route to Sydney. Mr James Begg left this morning for Wellington. i Major Peter M’Kenzie left for Wellington to-day to attend a conference of the Sheepowners’ Federation. Mr M. Silverstone left this morning for Wellington. Mr W. D. Sutherland was reappointed the Education Board’s representative on the Dunedin Vocational Guidance Association at the monthly meeting of the board! to-day. At last night’s meeting of the Otago Centro of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the president (Mr C. W. Clark) welcomed Mr T. M. Brydone, a former secretary of the centre, who was recently appointed chairman of the Southland .Sub-amateur Athletic Association.

Dr Basil L. Wilson, of Hokitika, accompanied by Lis wife .and daughter, returned recently from England by the Mariposa. Dr Wilson secured his F.R.C.S. degree at Edinburgh, and on his way back-to the Dominion spent t. o months in the United States.

The Chancellor of the University of Otago (Mr W. J. Morrell), at the meeting of the council yesterday, referred to the recently reported appointment of Dr R. R. Nimmo to the first Nuffield Fellowship at the Birmingham University. Dr Nimmo, said the Chancellor, had acted as assistant in the physic* department at the Otago University for a period of 18 months during the year* 1925-26, and it was most gratifying to know that two former Otago men in. Dr Nimmo and Dr Murray Falconer; wore holding Nuffield Fellowships., IK was decided to convey the hearty congratulations of the council to Dr Nimmo on the high distinction which had been conferred upon him. Appreciation of the services of Mr A, Clark, who has retired from the position of district traffic manager of the Railway Department, was expressed at the meeting last night of'the Chamber of Commerce. Mr Clark has resighed from, the chamber. Mr A. E. Hargreaves, who is the new district traffic manager at Dunedin, was welcomed to the meeting. Miss Reekie, a member of the staff in the office of the Registrar of the University of Otago, yesterday received tho felicitations of the members of the University Council on the eve of her marriage. Tho Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) said that tho council realised very keenly the very valuable service which Miss Reekie had rendered over a i period of years, and it wished to express its gratitude and its heartiest wishes for her happiness and prosperity. The council’s' appreciation was further demonstrated by a-gift of china. 4 - Sir Charles Norwood, accompanied by Lady Norwood, will leave Wellington at the end of 'the week for Auckland to connect with the Mariposa for the United States of America, oh his way to England. - 1 Mr W. J. Gray, a veterinary surgeon formerly attached to the Agricultural Department, with his wife and family, will leave Wellington on Friday by tho Awatea, to take up an appointment with the Government of Tanganyika (formerly German East Africa). At the monthly meeting of the council of/the University of Otago yesterday, the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) referred to the recent death of Lady Allen, who, said the Chancellor, had ’ been a lady of great kindliness and one who had taken a keen interest in th®. University and in the community generally. The meeting passed a resolution expressing deep sympathy with Sir . James Allen. • . The death of Mr Henry Mitchell, a member of the Chamber of Commerce for 30 years, was referred to by the president (Mr P. O. Smellie) at the monthly meeting last night. Ho said that Mr Mitchell had a lengthy connection with the business interests of the city, and was a man of sterling character and kindly disposition. H« served for three years on the council and the executive of the chamber. A motion of condolence with Mrs Mitchell was carried. . - ~ Latest arrivals at Wain s Hotel include Mr W. M.
