SPIES IN AMERICA
ALARMING INCREASE IN ACTIVITIES FUNDS TO FINANCE DRIVE BY G-MEN Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright WASHINGTON, May 18.' (Received May 19, at 9.40 a.m.) The House Appropriations Committee, acting after Mr J. Edgar Hoover had reported that, the activities of spies were increasing alarmingly, approved a 3,000i000d0l fund to finance a counterespionage drive by G-men.
A record of Mr Hoover’s testimony filed with the Bill showed that, although spy cases averaged only 35 annually for the five years preceding 1933, 634 cases were investigated last year, and Mr Hoover anticipated nearly 800 for 1939.
Mr Hoover said the army and navy had asked G-men to establish counterespionage offices at Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the Panama Canal zone, and in the Philippines. The fund mentioned was intended for use against spies, kidnappers, and extortionists.
