WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As a constant traveller by real between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, I would like to draw the attention! of ratepayers to the way in which' tho work is carried on in that borpugll. For five days of the week you will find fit and able-bodied men chipping weed* and doing other work which in most oases is quite unnecessary. For a number of years the West Harbour Borough has had a very large quota of cheap labour, but the council would not spend any revenue on material to complete work of a permanent nature. _ If the ratepayer would supply the pipes andl other material the council would do th* work. The Main road, which constantly requires attention and a considerable sum for upkeep, has been a main highway for a few years, thus lessening th« cost of upkeep to the borough, but there has been no reduction of rates. About six years ago a councillor informed the ratepayers that the electna light account was in such a sound state that it enabled the council to erect additional lights in St. Leonards Ward. Shortly afterwards the lighting rate for that ward was increased. The general rates in one or more of the wards are far too high, considering the anioun' of work that is done in these parts of bo borough Wake up, ratepayers. — 1 »m, etc.. Amalgamation.' May 19.
