S.P.C.A. At tho monthly meeting of the North Otago Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals the town inspector stated that the. publication of reports in the newspapers had helped to minimise cruelty. He had visited the motor camp, but found no cats there. He had arranged for two working dogs to receive better shelter. Tho country inspector reported that a horse had had to be destroyed and the owner of some dogs had agreed to exercise them more. HOCKEY. Tho North Otago Men’s Hockey Subassociation has decided to affiliate with the Otago Association. Representative matches against Otago at Oamaru on Dlay 27, Mid-Canterbury at Ashburton on August 26, South Canterbury, and Southland were arranged for. KAKANUI HALL. The Kakanui Athenaeum Hall subscribers, at the annual meeting, elected the following committee — Messrs J, D. M'Gregor (chairman), J. M‘Pha 11 (secretary), T. G. Tyson (treasurer), J. M’Gregor, R. Rapson, J. A. Tyson, and D. Waters. MINIATURE RIFLES. An enjoyable progressive pairs snooker tournament, held by the Phoenix Bowling Club, was won by F. Simkin and J. Maxwell. P.W.M.U. Owing to sickness being fairly prevalent, only 15 members were present at the monthly meeting of the Kurow Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union. Mrs T. Cleave presided, and Dlrs Barton, of Weston, gave an interesting address on the work of missions in the New Hebrides, India, and China, and among the Maoris, DRY WEATHER. North Otago is experiencing very fine weather, but farmers are hoping for rain. Ground that has not been fallowed is hard to work. The weather is almost as warm as in the usual summer. OBITUARY. Mr John Toner, who died on Wednesday at Oamaru, was a prominent number' of Lodge Kilwinning, having passed through all the chairs. He was first principal of the Waitaki Kilwinning Chapter. He was born at Gore. During the Boer War he went to South Africa in charge of remounts and trained horses at Natal. Mr Peter Murray, of Usk street, Oamaru, who passed away on Tuesday, was one of tho pioneers of North Otago. . He was a foundation member of the Holy Name Society of the Roman Catholic Church. Ho is survived by a son, Mr P. Murray (Wellington) and a daughter, Mrs Ahern (Oamaru), and four grandchildren. •
